Overview
Aim:
Depression is up to two times more common in cardiology patients than in the general population and it is also a risk factor for cardiac morbidity and mortality. The aim of the research was to investigate the occurrence of depression in elderly patients with chronic heart failure, hospitalised in the cardiovascular department.
Methodology:
The Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS) was used to obtain the data. The group consisted of 103 respondents with chronic heart failure.
Results:
In the monitored group of 103 respondents, there were 50 respondents (48.5%) without depressive syndrome, 43 respondents (41.8%) with mild depression and 10 respondents (9.7%) with manifest depressive syndrome. Statistically significant results were found in terms of dependence between depression and age (p = 0.026) and between depression and family background (p = 0.019) based on the statistical analysis.
Conclusion:
Elderly patients with chronic heart failure hospitalised in cardiovascular departments suffered from depression. Depression occurred in varying degrees in the majority of the patients in the monitored group. It is therefore desirable to detect depression before it has a negative impact on the associated disease of the patient.
Key words:
depression – elderly – chronic heart failure – GDS
